Why Should I join?
There are many reasons to join our APhA-ASP chapter. Members enjoy many benefits of being an APhA student member including free monthly journal subscriptions, discounted prices on excellent drug references available from APhA, free liability insurance to fourth year members during rotations, and many opportunities to gain experience in leadership by participating in APhA-ASP related activities either on campus or online. Additionally, we conduct an annual Patient Counseling Competition in the Fall semester. This is an excellent opportunity to practice patient counseling in a non-threatening environment. The winner of our Patient Counseling Competition wins a trip (free flight and lodging) to APhA's National Meeting.
Probably the best reason to join includes our numerous volunteer opportunities for community service, pharmaceutical care projects, and our ongoing drug and alcohol education awareness presentations. Our committee chairs are continually working on projects and provide our members with excellent opportunities to help the Omaha community. Some examples from the past year have included volunteering at the Special Olympics, working to build a house with Habitat for Humanity, gathering over-the-counter donations for the Lydia House (a shelter), and a winter clothing drive for another area shelter. Drug and alcohol education presentations occur throughout the school year at local elementary schools (Katy's Kids presentations) and at high schools as well.
Finally, if those reasons are not enough to convince you to join,
APhA-ASP is a great way to
meet students that are not in your own class. By participating in projects
in Omaha or your home city and attending meetings on campus or online, our members
have the opportunity to interact with upperclassmen in
pharmacy and get advice on classes, jobs, books, and other tidbits that make
life easier for them during the school year.
APhA-ASP is a great way to meet
new people and form new friendships!
